Nine years ago, in 2009, 143 recorded watches were featured in the first (sold out) edition of our book “The References”.

During the research on the history behind a Ref. 3646 / Type D “Kampfschwimmer” with engraved caseback, we were able to study the diary of the first owner of the watch.To promote their new tritium-based Luminor, Giuseppe Panerai came up with a brilliant idea and his company modified 30 Ref. 3646 leftover watches from WWII and awarded them to high ranking Navy officers and families of World War II heroes.Panerai first introduced the Radiomir ref. 3646 on request from the Royal Italian Navy, all the way back in 1938. That watch measured 47mm in diameter and featured a luminescent radium dial, a screw-down crown, and wire lugs to attach a strap.
The first myth suggested the California dial was used in a Panerai Prototype in 1936. This is comletely untrue, and you can learn why by visiting PaneraiMagazine.com.
